Dr. Maria Montessori, born in 1870 in Italy, became one of the first female doctors in her country. Early in her career she worked with children with an intellectual disability and disadvantaged children. Through experimental research and close observation, she developed a pedagogy that helped all children.

Dr. Montessori’s approach has become known worldwide and the Montessori pedagogy can be adapted to all cultures and languages, needs and societies. There are around 20,000 schools worldwide using the Montessori approach across a wide range of different country and language groups. The Montessori method offers a sensible and structured system that allows children to engage in self-directed learning at their own pace with the guidance of a trained Montessori teacher and the use of specially designed Montessori teaching materials and equipment. The classroom is a nurturing, non-competitive environment where all areas of development are supported, including emotional, physical, social, and intellectual development.

Montessori Curriculum

The Montessori approach aims to help children become confident and independent, to take care of themselves and the environment, to concentrate, to make choices, to be responsible, and to respect others.

The Montessori Method is characterized by a carefully prepared learning environment, well-ordered and attractive, simple and real, where each element exists for a reason in order to help in the development of the child. A Montessori classroom integrates children of mixed ages to promote socialization, respect and solidarity in an organic and natural way.

This prepared environment offers the child opportunities to choose learning activities that they find interesting and to fully engage in their chosen task. Children work with concrete materials that were scientifically designed for their individual purpose and which provide them with the keys to explore our world and develop basic cognitive abilities. Learning materials are designed to enable the child to recognize mistakes on their own and become responsible for their own learning through a process of trial and error.

The teacher is an observer and a guide: they help and stimulate the child with all their effort. The curriculum for children from 3 to 6 years old is divided into four working areas: practical life, language, sensorial, science and math. The children are grouped into 4 groups in Santisouk by Casa; Casa Spring age 2-2.5/3 years old, Casa Rainbow age 2.5-3.5/4 years old, Casa Sunshine age 3.5-4.5/5 years old and Casa Forest age 4.5/5-6 years old.
